I am Using My Voice!

Kids repeat the same simple phrases of dialogue to express a variety of emotions, and experience how vocal choices change the meaning of spoken words. This warm up prepares students  to make expressive vocal choices and deepens understanding of dialogue.

    1st graders explore & express emotion vocabulary

    In this game, rhythm, call & response, and the repeated phrase “I am Using My Voice” are used to explore emotions. Each prompt repeats so that kids can jump in once they’re ready, or build on what they already know by trying different interpretations inspired by their teachers or peers. You can also prompt with vocal qualities or character traits.

    First graders build toward expressive puppet dialogue

    These students have just vocally explored emotions in unison by doing the I am Using My Voice warm up. In this video, they’re transitioning into the Expressive Dialogue Game as preparation to make expressive puppet dialogue in small groups. Adaptations: 1) Use any simple lines of dialogue to repeat 2) prompt the game with vocal qualities or character traits.

Kids experiment with how physical and vocal choices express emotions & character traits, first with their own body & voice and then with their puppets.  Teachers guide exploration using a repeated phrase and variety of expressive prompts.

    In this example, kids repeat the phrase “Look! It started to snow!” to express a variety of emotions. They try it with their bodies and then with their 2-face puppets, preparing them to use expressive voices in puppet play. Choose any simple repeated phrase that connects to your students’ interests and will inspire their story making through puppet play.
